Cyanotype Study
-
The majority of my work focuses closely on my life experiences and relies heavily on introspection. After creating What are we, if not a product of our environment? in 2022, I desperately needed a mental break, while still practicing creativity. What started as small experimentations and a sort of meditative practice, grew into a large body of work that I’ve deemed a Cyanotype Study.
Each print uses the same process: paint cyanotype onto watercolor paper with a circular or triangular stencil; add droplets of water; pour salt haphazardly on top; expose the print in sunlight; after a few hours, bring it in to wash with water and air-dry; when fully dry, intuitively add gold leaf to each print.
The results of each print resemble small planets or petri dishes, alive with small, intricate details. I like to think of this repetitive, yet abstract, process as a collaboration with the universe and the elements. Much of my art practice incorporates experimenting until I achieve what I’ve envisioned, however this body of work kept my thoughts fully in the creation process, rather than continually aiming for a specific outcome. I’m thankful for this experience to create so freely and in bulk.
